April Masini’s positive impact has inspired numerous awards, including the establishment of the annual, statewide, “Masini Volunteer of the Year Award” and the proclamation of June 4 “Masini Day”.
Vanity Fair Magazine, October 2024
“April and her ‘Army’ produced 9 back-to-back world-class-themed events, breaking two state records with Hawaii’s largest weekday parade and ‘Share Aloha with the World’, Hawaii’s most successful statewide children’s contest. Its 2,987 pieces of art still line the walls of every airport across Hawaii.

The legend of the Baywatch hyjacking,
Masini executed what many considered genuinely impossible. In Australia, Prime Minister Howard had already publicly announced Baywatch’s impending arrival. The deal was, to all external observers, done. April Masini — without a prior relationship with the show’s executive producer — convinced him to cancel the planned move to Australia and bring Baywatch to Hawaii instead.
s heading to Australia with Prime Minister John Howard publicly announcing the deal, April Masini convinced Executive Producer Gregg Bonann — who she had never met — to consider Hawaii instead. Gregg canceled his meeting with the Prime Minister and flew to meet Governor Ben Cayetano, and historic legislation quickly followed, co-written by April, requiring the show to rename itself Baywatch Hawaii, hire 80% local crew, and cast two Hawaii residents as lead characters — one of whom was a then-unknown Jason Momoa. The impact was transformative: more than 150 full-time jobs, roughly $20 million a year in local spending, and global exposure reaching an estimated 5.7 billion viewers.

“April, as a private citizen, pioneered Hawaii’s first major cross-promotional deal with Universal Pictures for Blue Crush and secured perpetual, royalty-free rights for the state. The U.S. Department of Commerce still uses the film’s footage to promote Hawaii around the world today…”

“April assisted in drafting and lobbying for industry-related legislation — including SB1958 for the Miss Universe Pageant and HB2960 for Baywatch Hawaii — producing measurable outcomes, most notably transforming Hawaii’s $2.7 million public investment into $66 million in international media exposure and advertising. Later, as founder and CEO of Masini Enterprises, April leveraged Hawaii’s newly enacted Act 221 to raise approximately $18 million in financing for Universal Studios’ Blue Crush, forging a strategic relationship between Universal and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau.”.
